Beach RepublicWhen Beach Republic opened in December 2008 it sure changed things forever on this beautiful tropical island — for the better!

The concept is a stylish beach club with a full range of facilities, including: a well-stocked gym, an innovative Asian fusion spa - Higher Plane, and a fine-dining restaurant that’s already becoming one of Samui’s ‘must visit’ eateries.

And the reasons for the restaurant being so special are many. Firstly, it has to be the amazing architecture here. Looping steel arches combine with polished teak to form the main support. The thatched roofing is styled in such a way that the whole area is covered yet open at the same time. And the attention to detail, and comfort, here is second to none. Add to this the chic ‘republic’ theme that runs throughout, with the club’s own flag and funky military-style uniforms worn by the staff. And the place definitely exudes a fun, laid-back atmosphere.

There’s booth-style seating here, traditional tables and chairs there, and relaxing lounge areas, too. Plus, if you want to be completely out in the open, there are more tables and chairs set up for dining around the pool and the 30-metre beach frontage itself.

Although many of the restaurants in Samui Dining Guide focus mainly on dinner, Beach Republic make their restaurant a special place to have lunch, too. And their all-inclusive Sunday Brunch encompassing champagne cocktails and wine is such excellent value that it’s already become the place to be on a Sunday. Plus, for a nominal fee, you can have one day’s membership to the beach club; meaning that you’ll also have full use of the pool, sun-loungers, changing rooms and other facilities.

It’s all very well having a fantastic restaurant, but it all means nothing without the food. And at Beach Republic it’s superb, too. This is mainly due to the expertise of their Executive Chef - Matthew Garon. And with over ten years’ professional cooking and kitchen management experience in some of the finest restaurants in the world (including Number Nine Park in Boston, and Keon’s 105 Bistro), he’s well-proven.

So what tasty items can you expect to find on the exciting Mediterranean menu then? Well there’s a lot. The enticing tapas menu includes items such as: Chorizo and Peach Skewers; Fried Oysters with golden beet remoulade; and Wagyu Beef Tartar, grain mustard and pickled chanterelles. And for lunch you could have the Tuna Carpaccio with Nicoise olives, Vidalia onion, haricot vert, potato aioli and mache followed by the Crab Agnolotti with guancialle, pickled chantrelles and native corn broth.

Beach RepublicAgain, the dinner menu has some most interesting items, including the Grilled Squab with gooseberry jam, watercress, cabernet vinegar and fried quail egg for starters, and the Beach Republic signature dish Wood-grilled Lobster with warm tomato butter, fried shallots and chorizo hash as a main course (cooked in the restaurant’s very own Italian wood-fired oven).
The desserts here sound equally enticing with the Hazelnut Churros with Gianduja, and the Almond-Mascarpone, Black Rice-pudding with toasted toffee-almond being recommended by the chef himself.

To accompany all this marvelous food are some great wines, too, including some particularly fine roses from Provence. And the excellent cocktail list has some memorable martinis on offer. The music is Lounge, Latin and Jazz, but is played in the background - this isn’t a loud party venue.

And, finally, I’d better tell you where it is. As you’re coming on the ring-road from Chaweng heading towards Lamai it’s just 100 metres down the second road on the left after you pass the large IT Complex buildings. There’s plenty of parking should you be bringing your own car, and there’s a chauffeur service if you’re not.

Yes, it’s about time Samui had a place like this. And I, for one, think it’s superb!
