Bura RestaurantSamaya Bura resort is on the ring-road as you approach Lamai from Chaweng, just before the massive Buddy Boutique Hotel. And although it has a smart frontage with its thriving bakery shop on one side, this gives you absolutely no indication of what’s inside. But enter the spacious lobby and your eyes will immediately be drawn through to the ocean on the other side. And when you step through into colourful gardens the whole place seems to open up into a wonderful wide world of turquoise swimming pools, lotus ponds, wooden walkways, and attractive contemporary styling.

The pathway to Bura Restaurant leads you past flaming torches, through an ornate thatched roof archway and past one of the pools. There’s seating for 64 here, and you can choose to sit inside the ‘open on two sides’ restaurant with its smart white circular pillars and high vaulted ceiling, or on the ‘open to the stars’ wooden terrace. But there are two further options. You can also request a table be set up on Samaya Bura’s raised private beach area underneath the swaying coconut trees, or you can secure a private sala (up to four persons) set slightly apart from the restaurant - great for a spot of romance.

So, with a smug smile of satisfaction on your face after discovering such a perfect place, you’ll find it will broaden when you browse through the menu and see what’s on offer. This is both a Thai and an International restaurant. And the Thai cuisine served here is authentic, meaning that it’s not de-tuned for the Western palate, unless you request it to be so. Try the Tom Jid Pla Kalubple - cabbage-wrapped minced fish and seaweed soup - for a starter, and you’ll realise that they really do know what they’re doing in the kitchen. Then follow it up with the Gaeng Phed Ped Yang - duck curry with pineapple, tomato and almond dressing - as a main course, and you’ll start planning a return trip the next day for more of the same.

And the International dishes are equally addictive. An original Beef Carpaccio on grana cheese with a mixed salad is a perfect example from the starters’ selection, and the HUGE Bura Grill comprising beef, chicken and pork steaks served with 3 different sauces, grilled vegetables and baked potato is a signature main course dish that lives up to its expectations. As does the Freshly Grilled Red Snapper served with diced vegetables and ratatouille sauce, which deserves a big recommendation, too.

Bura RestaurantAnd as you might expect from a place that also operates a stand-alone bakery, the desserts are truly superb. With both the Banoffe Pie - an Oreo cookie pie filled with banana custard - and the Vanilla-infused Creme Brulee - rich custard topped with a layer of caramel crust - being perfect examples. Don’t even glance at the desserts’ menu if you’re on a diet for your willpower will immediately disintegrate.

Food like this doesn’t prepare itself magically into excellent dishes on it own. It needs the skills of a master to do this. And, luckily, Bura Restaurant has such a master in its highly experienced Executive Chef, Khun Sombat Samutchan. Previously at the Dusit Pattaya and Sofitel Kong Kaen, he’s the perfect person to be in charge at this brand-new fine-dining restaurant. His presentation of dishes is imaginative and exciting, as are his personal recipes. And his expertise is a major factor in Bura Restaurant’s success.

And you can be assured that when you’ve reached the end of your meal your fleeting smile of anticipation will have evolved into a lingering smile of satisfaction.
