Go down to Fisherman’s Village and when you reach the beach road turn right, and you’ll find Cafe de France just 150 metres along, beachside on the left. As you enter the smart wood-paneled reception and bar area you’ll see that this is a very elegant establishment. But don’t think that this means formal - far from it. There’s a cosy homeliness about the place and a lot of that is to do with the friendly staff.
Head through the 30-seater restaurant and you’ll find several dining options: tables for two or four, sofa seating, and also inside or out. There are just three tables on the small terrace overlooking the beach and these are always very popular so booking them in advance is advisable.
Terracotta walls match the terracotta-coloured table linen and this is contrasted by grey stone-tiled flooring and lots of huge pot plants here and there. The glass-topped tables and chairs are classic wrought-iron with comfortable padding. And old-style wall lanterns illuminate the place, with framed photographs of boats lining the walls adding interesting touches to the general decor.
So, the scene is set. And now the most important part of the proceeding - the food. As you’d have every right to expect, this comes courtesy of a French chef (who’s also a partner in the business), and his name is Christian Garigliet. Hailing from Lyon, the gastronomic capital of France, Christian began his life-long love affair with cooking over 30 years ago at his grandmother’s side in the family kitchen. And he’s gone from strength to strength ever since. His cuisine is the ‘real thing’ when it comes to home-style French cooking and really has to be tried to be appreciated.
There’s a good selection of both hot and cold starters with excellent examples being the Carpaccio of Red Tuna, and the Escalopes of Duck Foie Gras Poeled. In the main course menu there are sections for fish and crustaceans, poultry, and meats; all offering lots of mouth-watering temptations. You won’t be disappointed if you order the delicious Phuket Lobster Cake with lobster sauce, and the Roast Lamb Tenderloin with cepes (specially imported mushrooms) and cream cognac sauce will melt in your mouth, quite literally. Oh, and the portions are huge, as you’d expect from a chef who wants you to experience his cooking to the full!
And should you be dining with someone that doesn’t want to enjoy any international food whilst they’re here and only wants to eat the local food, there’s also a selection of favourite Thai dishes prepared by the restaurant’s very own Thai cooks.
I must say that the desserts here really are exquisite. Both the Chocolate Fondant and the Creme Caramel are extremely popular, with very good reason. But do try the Fruit Pie of the Day if you want to have an extra-ordinary sensual experience. You won’t regret it.
Christian loves cooking traditional French cuisine, and that fact really does come across in his cooking. Yes, the French really know their onions when it comes to wining and dining!
