Eat SenseBut it takes more than just excellent cuisine to make a superb dining experience. And this innovative, exciting new beachside restaurant with the appropriate name - Eat Sense - offers a lot more.

For a start, it has one of the island’s finest seaside locations. Right in the middle of Chaweng, with an expansive 40-metre beach frontage, it’s located between Banana Fan Sea Beach Resort and Buri Rasa. And although there’s seating for a hundred diners, it’s very spacious. Raised terraces, split-level patios, grassy gardens all provide intimate locations - just metres away from the rippling waves.

Decor and design are also major factors here. Contemporary Thai-style architecture of the restaurant building itself, and a beautiful landscaped garden make dining at Eat Sense a visual pleasure too. Exactly what you dreamed a tropical beachside restaurant on Samui would be like, complete with swaying palm trees and soft, silvery sand.

Huge hanging lanterns, ornate Oriental brickwork and numerous ‘overflowing’ water urns complete the scenario, leaving everything else down to the staff, and that vital ingredient that I was talking about earlier - the food. Being courteous, friendly, highly-organised and, most importantly, well-trained, the staff here make everything run like clockwork. No misunderstandings here. They ensure that your orders are taken precisely, and presented swiftly.

But before I finally get on to what’s actually on offer, a word about the produce used in creating the dishes. Eat Sense prides itself on serving only the freshest of ingredients. And that includes using hydroponically grown vegetables from the King of Thailand’s local agricultural project. Needless to say that they haven’t been anywhere near any chemicals. And, incidently, the chefs here don’t apply any additives (such as the dreaded MSG) either.

There’s Thai, international, and seafood available in the varied menu (plus three interesting Spa Cuisine, four-course set meals at an incredible 490 Baht per head). Recommended starters include: Poo Nim Thod Rad Sauce Ma-maung - crispy soft-shell crab with mango sauce, accompanied by mango, green pepper, tomato and organic vegetables; Po Pea Sod - fresh spring rolls with your choice of prawns, crabmeat, fish, chicken or pork.

Eat SenseEat Sense is especially proud of its lobster dishes - for very good reasons. The Deep-fried Lobster, in particular, with sweet and sour sauce is simply outstanding. And for fish lovers, it would take a lot to beat the Pla Thod Ta Khrai- deep-fried whole fish with lemongrass, garlic, pepper and kaffir lime leaves. Being freshly-caught really does make all the difference. And that applies equally for the prawn dishes, such as the Goong Thod Lad Sauce Ma-kham - deep-fried prawns with sauteed shallot slices, and cashew nut in tamarind sauce. It’s worth noting that when Thai food is ordered, the serving staff always ask whether you want it a little, medium or very spicy. You won’t be burning your mouth at Eat Sense - unless you want to!

And if you definitely dislike Thai cuisine, not to worry. There’s a good selection of western dishes too, such as: Shark Steak wiih white wine sauce accompanied by asparagus strip, sauteed potatoes and vegetable salad; and the Australian T-bone Steak with gravy and accompanied by grilled pineapple, tomatoes, sauteed vegetables and salad.

As a final treat for your ‘eat’ sense - dessert. Crepe Pon-la-mai (crepe with exotic seasonal fruit) and ice-cream, or the Thai dessert - Guay Kai Cheum (sweet banana in syrup) with ice-cream are ideal dishes to end an evening of fine dining. And there’s a fine selection of excellent wines to complement the excellent cuisine in this special restaurant. All in all, dining at Eat Sense is a healthy, relaxing and satisfying experience - which makes a lot of good sense!
