And it’s not to be found amongst the many other popular restaurants along the beaches. Nor is it on the busy roads with throngs of tourists marching past just metres away. No, Muda Restaurant sits peacefully alone on the side of Chaweng Lake, far away from the hustle and bustle yet still in Chaweng, and it really is an idyllic location.
If you’re driving there yourself, it really isn’t that difficult to find. Take the turn into Chaweng from the traffic lights near Tesco-Lotus on the ring-road. About 100 metres down, with a temple on your right, the road will turn sharply to your left. Here you turn off and take the road that goes straight on, and it will lead you directly to the lake. Turn left here and about 200 metres along you’ll come to Muda House, the resort in which the restaurant is situated.
There, that was easy wasn’t it! But if you’re still not sure, not to worry. Just give them a call and they’ll arrange a complimentary transfer from and to your hotel. Right, that’s the boring bit over. Now let me take you into another world. A world that most visitors to Thailand never see. A world steeped in history, mesmerising music and dancing, and some of the finest Royal Thai cuisine you’ll ever have the joy of experiencing.
Muda House is one of the most intimate resorts on Samui with accommodation comprising just five houses. And these houses are original old wooden homes that have been transported here adding to the overall authenticity. They look out across a long black-tiled swimming pool and on to the lake itself with its surrounding green rice fields and temple-topped hills. And then there’s the beautiful Muda Restaurant.
On a theme with the old houses, the wood in the restaurant is rough cut and authentic, with five tables on either side, each seating up to six people. And, in keeping with traditional Thai style, you step up on a raised platform to your low table and sit upon cushions around it. For those not wishing to sit Thai-style, there are also several regular tables in the central area. Large windows frame a view of the lake on one side and on the other side there’s a huge stage. And it needs to be! For it’s here that a large cast of resident musicians and dancers perform a different set every night from 8:15 pm almost continuously through to 10:00 pm. And everything is authentic with the performances. Right down to the original costumes, which have to be sewn onto the dancers every night, in keeping with tradition.
And at this point I’d better introduce you to the owner, M.L. Archava Varavana, because his magic touch is everywhere. M.L. Archava, himself, is a member of the Thai royal family and he’s brought the performers down to Samui, directly from the Grand Palace - need I say more? And he’s also brought down the royal household’s private Royal Thai cuisine recipes that are used at Muda Restaurant, and has personally created five French cuisine dishes that are also available here (M.L. Archava lived in Paris for 27 years). And these special dishes include: an exceptional Butter Fish in white wine sauce; Buyabes; a Lobster, also in a white wine sauce with mayonnaise; and Fried Frog with butter
The Thai menu has many exciting dishes, too, and the following are personally recommended: Phoo Jaa - crab meat with mixer fried in a crab shell; Beef Mussaman Curry, Fish in thick yellow curry sauce; and Seafood with Thai chili paste. In fact, all of the dishes are very recommendable, so go ahead and order anything!
A night’s dining at Muda Restaurant is a special experience. And you won’t find another restaurant on Samui that serves authentic Royal Thai Cuisine that’s been created by a member of the Thai Royal Family. In fact, you won’t find a restaurant anywhere in the world that does, either!
